🚲 Getting Started – What You Need to Ride

Getting started at Jingili BMX Club is easy, and we’re here to support riders and families every step of the way. Whether you’re brand new or ready to race, here’s everything you need to know.


πŸ“‹ Licence Requirements

All riders must hold a valid AusCycling licence to ride on the track for insurance and safety purposes.

4 Week Free Trial Licence

  • Perfect for new riders wanting to try BMX
  • Covers participation in training and racing
  • Available via the link on our website

Annual Licence

  • Required after the trial period
  • Provides full insurance coverage
  • Allows riders to participate in all club events and racing

🚴 Bike Requirements

To ride on the track, bikes must meet basic BMX safety standards:

  • BMX bike (single speed)
  • Working brakes (no front brake required / must be disconnected if fitted)
  • No chain guards
  • No kickstands
  • No pegs
  • No reflectors or loose accessories

Bikes should be in safe working condition at all times.


πŸ›‘οΈ Rider Safety Gear

All riders must wear the following:

  • Full face helmet
  • Long sleeve shirt or jersey
  • Long pants
  • Gloves
  • Enclosed shoes

πŸ‘‰ The club has a limited number of helmets and gloves available for new riders, but we recommend bringing your own where possible.


πŸ“‘ Transponders (Timing & Scoring)

Riders aged 8 years and over, who are racing from the top of the start hill, are required to use a MyLaps transponder.

  • Mounted on the right-hand front fork
  • Used for timing and race results
  • Available for hire or purchase through the club

 


🏁 Rider Categories & Progression

We support riders at all levels, with structured groups to help build confidence and skills.

🟒 Mini Wheelers

  • Balance bikes only
  • Focus on fun, balance, and basic skills
  • Ride on modified sections of the track

πŸ”΅ Non-Confident Gate Starters / New Riders

  • Riders new to the sport and still progressing toward starting from the top of the start hill
  • Start races from the first jump and complete full laps
  • Focus on bike control, track awareness, and skill development
  • Progress toward starting from the top of the hill

🟑 Sprockets

  • Riders aged 5, 6, and 7 years racing from the top of the start hill
  • Entry-level race category focused on participation
  • Not timed, allowing riders to focus on skills and confidence
  • Emphasis on fun, learning race flow, and building experience

  • Confident riders starting from the top of the start hill
  • Race the full track
  • Ability-based divisions (not strictly age-based at club level)
  • Focus on performance, race skills, and progression
